Win a day on two Swiss lakes

July 25, 2014, 32 Comments

Two first-class day passes for Lakes Thun & Brienz are up for grabs. What better way to enjoy a Swiss summer day than gliding around in vintage paddle-steamers, relaxing on the first class deck while watching the scenery slip past. All for nothing. Free! Gratis!

Lake Thun

Thanks to the lovely people at Interlaken Tourism, I have two pairs of first-class day passes for the boats on both lakes. That’s four passes in total, but I’m giving them away as two pairs so there can be two winners.

Paddle-steamer detail

Each pass is valid for all the boats on Lake Thun and/or Lake Brienz, so that you can hop on & off where and when you wish, or even just stick to one lake if you prefer. You don’t need a Half-fare card but simply need to validate the passes before you get on board the first ship.

Spiez

So with these passes you can explore the towns & castles beside Lake Thun, from Thun itself across to Spiez and on to Interlaken. Just remember that no boats sail between the lakes; you have to get off in Interlaken and cross town to board the boat on the other lake.

Brienzersee

Lake Brienz might be almost half the size of its neighbour but it is deepest lake in Switzerland, at 261 metres. It’s also a lot less hectic and its rural delights are best enjoyed from the deck of the paddle-steamer Lötschberg.

Giessbach

Or maybe a stop off at Giessbach, with its the cool waterfalls and grand hotel, for a spot of tea on the terrace. Complete with a lake view of course.

Lake Brienz

To win the passes, all you have to do is leave a comment here, or head over to the Swiss Watching Facebook page and ‘like’ that. Or on that Facebook page like the post or leave a comment about this competition. That’s it. Draw closes at midnight on 31 July 2014. The two winners will be drawn at random and contacted by email so that the passes can be sent by normal post.

Thun

Winners must be resident in Switzerland or visiting soon with enough time to make use of the passes. Please don’t enter if you don’t have time to enjoy the prize. The passes are valid until December 2015 but once stamped are only valid on that day.

For boat timetables, please visit this BLS page. There is even one timetable specially for the two-lake cruise, showing that it is possible to do both lakes by boat in one day.

Brilliant work Diccon! Thanks for setting this up.

I’ve sailed a lot on Lac Léman, and a bit on Vierwaldstättersee … but never on these two lakes.

The scenery and sights will be amazing.

Lucky people who win! (Hoping it’s me of course.)

    Cheers

    Alistair

What a great idea Diccon. I’ve only ever been for a short cruise on lake Lucerne. I’d love a chance to win a ticket or two for something a bit more involved.

That’s exactly where my friend and I are going for the Swiss National Day, the 1st of August! We planned a perfect Swiss weekend: visiting Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg, going to the Reichenbach Falls, hikes & walks, and Wilhelm Tell open-air performance in Matten at night. Will be staying in Brienz. And now this chance to come back again for the boat in style 🙂

What a great promotion! My parents are returning to Switzerland for the first time since they were here for our wedding five years ago. My husband and I (based in Rickenbach) are looking forward to showing them around and this would be a pleasant surprise for them. They’re already travelling with your book!

Hi, I am building a model of a vintage swiss steam launch and a close-up view would be extra helpful. It is many years since our last visit to Switzerland and a prize like this would be just the incentive to visit again.

My wife and I visit Switzerland every year for work and holiday. Interlaken is our favourite getaway. I enjoyed reading your book on the Swiss! Very enjoyable indeed. It is interesting to compare the comments on the Swiss by Bill Bryson in his travel book. I hope we are lucky to win a steamer ride in and around our favourite destination. Our next visit to Swiss is next week!!!
Happy writing!!! We look forward to your future publications.
